Savannah's Southern House recently opened at 3901 Crompond Road in Cortlandt Manor, in the town of Yorktown. The restaurant is owned by the DiPaterios, who run Little Sorrento on Crompond Road and Piazza Roma in the Cortlandt Town Center.

The DiPaterios feel they are filling a void in the area. Not many Westchester restaurants offer fried green tomatoes, hush puppies, chicken fried steak and grits.

Paul DiPaterio said the restaurant offers American comfort food in a relaxed family friendly atmosphere.

"There's something for everyone," DiPaterio said. "We cater to all walks of life."

DiPaterio said they didn't want to open another Italian restaurant feeling the area was already saturated. They love Southern food and visited the South several times. The DiPaterios even hired a chef from North Carolina,  Sean Lyons.

"His  fried chicken is delicious," DiPaterio said. "The pulled pork sandwich is phenomenal. "

To make sure they cater to all people, DiPaterio said 50 percent of the menu is gluten free.

DiPaterio's wife, Gina, said she hopes the area embraces what they are trying to do.

"I feel they are ready for it," Gina said. "We love this type of food."

Gina DiPaterio said her family used to run a restaurant in the building which houses Savannah's Southern House.

"I feel like we have come full circle," DiPaterio said. "My family has been cooking here for over 70 years. It's a wonderful community."

DiPaterio's son, also named Paul, will be joining the family business, managing Savannah Southern House. Gina said people will be excited with what their chef whips up.

"We are so happy to have him," DiPaterio said. "His fried green tomatoes are off the hook. The peach cobbler is to die for."

Savannah's Southern House offers specialties like parmesan cheese grits as a way of catering to its New York clientele.

"We want people to come in and check us out," DiPaterio said. "Nothing is out of the box. Everything here is made from scratch."
