PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- A Peekskill bakery received a call every aspiring big leaguer dreams of: to help out the New York Yankees.
For the last six years, Homestyle Desserts, at 27 S. Water St., has been making elaborate cakes for the Bronx Bombers in honor of Old-Timers' Day, which recently took place at Yankee Stadium.
This year's four-foot tall cake took two months to complete and honors the Yankees 27 World Series titles and its retired numbers. The cake shines a spotlight on Goose Gossage and Tino Martinez, who were honored by the Yankees with plaques in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium and at a dinner in Manhattan.
Aside from the cake, Homestyle Desserts, run by Rosa Sanca, also made baseballs out of icing and did replicas of Monument Park all in cake form, and also made blue velvet cupcakes.
Homestyle's connection with the Yankees happened by chance. Ace of Cakes had backed out at the last minute, and going by a recommendation, the Yankees contacted Homestyle. They've been back ever since.
"I am glad the Yankees picked me," Sanca said. "It's a New York bakery for a New York team. We're Yankee fans. It's a real honor."
Sanca has been running her bakery for 30 years, and previously ran a doughnut shop in Peekskill.
"I thank God everyday that we're still in business," Sanca said. "These are trying times. We work harder but for less money. Mom and pop bakeries don't exist anymore."
Homestyle Bakery has been forced to come up with new ideas, and has found popularity with its canoli chip and dip. Sanca said Peekskill is a great place to run a business.
"I love Peekskill," Sanca said. "The mayor and Common Council are very supportive. We are very happy having the support of local government."
Sanca was invited to Old-Timers' Day, getting her own private suite. She even got to meet Gossage, who was famous for intimidating hitters with his blistering fastball.
"He was so tall and handsome," Sanca said. "Out of all the Yankees, he was the nicest. He loved the cake."
