Bedford Wine Seller Searches World for New Tastes

Greece. Uruguay. South Africa. Mark Anacona, 49, the co-owner of Fountainhead Wines & Distillations in Bedford Hills, says the wines of these three countries offer something to satisfy wine drinkers with a thirst for a new taste.

After a successful run in East Norwalk, Conn, Anacona established the second location at 19 Depot Plaza in Bedford Hills.

While Anacona has purchased wine from as far away as New Zealand and Australia, he said that South Africa is starting to offer more to the international wine market, that Uruguay has some promising reds and that Greece has the perfect climate to grow grapes and other important winemaking ingredients. Anacona praised the quality of the Greek Retsina, a white or rose wine most commonly made from Savatino grapes.

"They've had the raw materials there forever." Anacona said. "They'll be more from there."

With such a taste for new items, perhaps unsurprisingly Anacona has gone beyond just selling his item of choice in a traditional wine store. He also is the co-owner of Fat Cat Pie Co. , a wine bar in Norwalk, Conn.

The location has earned a spot on America's 50 Most Amazing Food & Wine Experiences compiled by Food & Wine. Anacona is reluctant to call it a restaurant because it serves only organic pizza and a few other food items.

Anacona said that if another Fat Cat Pie opens up it would be in Bedford, but for now that is just a pipe dream. For now, he focuses on finding more small, quality wine producers

"We buy for red wine and white wine of a particular style," Anacona said. Not bigger names, he said, "smaller production."
