But the 16-year-old is joining fellow senior Brittany Figueroa to do whatever it takes to get those affected by cancer the help they need. To that end, the pair is coordinating this year’s Support Connection Tag Sale fundraiser that is set to raise funds for free breast and ovarian cancer support services. Stern and Figueroa, 17, have been working after school to prepare for the April 27 event at Yorktown Grange Hall at the Yorktown Grange Fair Grounds.

“Support Connection helps provide events to improve the community atmosphere but it also helps women dealing with breast and ovarian cancer,” Stern said. “I imagine that’s a very difficult thing to go through and I wanted to help Support Connection get them through that with all the support they need.”

Stern and Figueroa said they hope to supplement the Tag Sale with games and family activities to bring the community together for a good cause.

“We have encountered many people with cancer throughout our community service career, and understand how tough it must be to emotionally overcome such a life-threatening disease," Figueroa and Stern said in an email. "We can see that Support Connection makes that journey easier by giving women the strength they need to get through it all.”

The sale itself is set to feature a “wide selection of new or gently used items on sale, including small household goods, collectibles, jewelry, personal accessories, toys, games, books, DVDs, CDs, kitchenware and items suitable for college dorms,” according to a press release.

“We are reliant entirely on grants and fundraising events in order to provide our free services,” said Barbara Cervoni, director of services and communication at Support Connection. “We have a lot of different events throughout the year but it’s been really great to get two local high school students to help us because they have been really instrumental in making this a big event for us.”

Proceeds from the Tag Sale are set to benefit Support Connection, a not-for-profit organization that provides cancer support services. Support Connection was founded in 1996 in Yorktown Heights and today serves cancer patients throughout Westchester County. Their services include one-on-one peer counseling and support groups, holistic health workshops, Public educational programs and a support hotline at 1-800-532-4290. To learn more about the group, residents are asked to visit the Support Connection website.
