'Ole Skool' Music Rocks Greenburgh Library

ELMSFORD – As soon as Ole Skool started playing "Do You Love Me" by The Contours, the crowd began singing along, swaying from side to side and clapping their hands to the beat.

"How'd you like it so far," Alfred Stewart asked, grinning, after the song. "Don't lie to us, now!"

Stewart, a Greenburgh resident and the band's vocal director, vocalist and keyboard player, played a few notes of the next song. His words were met by applause and cat calls.

Ole Skool, a Westchester-based cover band comprised of eight over-40-year-olds, took the stage on Wednesday night to give its first performance at the Greenburgh Public Library. Their sound is a mix of disco, R&B, pop and light jazz.

"Our 'Learning to See' poetry workshop was a joy and a success beyond our wildest dreams," said librarian Valerie Griffith, who spent the night swaying and dancing to the music.

Audience members "boogied" – clapping, tapping, stomping, pop-locking, twirling, kicking, side-stepping, punching the air and swiveling hips.

As the night went on, more library patrons filed into the multi-purpose room after hearing the iconic tunes of The Supremes and Earth, Wind and Fire bellow through the halls.

"They're really good," said Portia Archer, whose daughters held hands and jumped up and down. "We just ran across them in the hallway, but they're really wonderful. It's a nice local surprise."

"We were happy to see family, friends and neighbors join us for the evening," said Tanya Johnson of Elmsford, Ole Skool's manager, vocalist and percussionist. "We would love to bring more live old school R&B music to Westchester and beyond."
