Hastings Chemka Pool to Receive $15K Upgrade

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – After a summer of inconsistency last year the Chemka Pool will be replacing its chemical controllers before opening this year.

“Chemical controllers are a device that is really critical in determining the proper amount of chlorine that is placed into all three pools,” said Village Manager Fran Frobel. “They were installed when the pool was last renovated back in 2004 and last year they were somewhat unreliable at times.”

The new controllers will cost approximately $15,000 according to early estimates done by the village, but that money will come from the pool’s own separate budget.

Frobel said that if the controllers were to fail for an extended period of time it could be a health hazard, forcing the pool to close.

“You want to have the right amount of chlorine to keep it healthy for the people to use it and this way it automatically tests the water coming out of the three pools and dispenses the proper amount of chlorine,” Frobel said.

After making an approximate $94,000 in extra revenue last year, Frobel said Chemka Pool has the money to spare after various successful programs.

“Those programs have really taken off plus I think the fact that last summer was pretty hot,” Frobel said.

Chemka also opened its services to 50 out of village residents for family passes to help bring in extra revenue. The new chemical controllers are scheduled to be purchased and installed by the middle of May, before the pool opens on May 26.
