Setters Drop Heartbreaker in NCAA Quarterfinals

The Pace women’s volleyball team Setters pushed the top-seeded New Haven Chargers to the limit but fell in tight five-set match 3-2 in the opening round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Division II tournament Thursday.

The Setters, who played a tight match all the way through to a 19-25, 27-29, 25-23, 25-19, 16-18 loss, finished their successful season at 20-11, while the Chargers improve to 22-6 and advanced to the East Region semi-finals.

Mount Kisco junior Nora Rugova, a Fox Lane High graduate, led the Setters with 17 kills, three aces and 21 digs, while senior Shea Hansen (Mesa, Az.) was outstanding in her final match in a Pace uniform with 59 assists and 17 digs.

Hartsdale’s Tamilee Webb (Ardsley High School) netted 16 kills, while Melanie Pavels (Valley Stream, N.Y) finished with 15 kills and 20 digs. Elyse Rowland (Antioch, Ca.) tallied 31 digs along with three aces as the Setters totaled 14 aces as a team.

Tied 2-2 after four sets, the Chargers would take a 7-4 lead. The Setters battled back tie the set at 12-12 and take a 14-12 lead. New Haven rallied to tie the set at 14 and take a one point lead and answered, scoring the next two points to lead 16-15. The Chargers rallied with the next three points to take the final set 18-16.
