"This morning's (Saturday's) accident at the Tappan Zee Bridge is a tragedy for all involved, and we must call into service all resources available at our disposal immediately to find the missing crew member of the tugboat Specialist," said state Sen. David Carlucci, D-Rockland/Westchester. "What is also concerning is the oil currently leaking from the Specialist and its impact on the delicate ecosystem surrounding the bridge. I urge the public to allow law enforcement agencies and the Department of Environmental Conservation to do their jobs so this tragic situation can be resolved as soon as possible."

After striking the barge, the tugboat began leaking up to 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel, a fuel-containing apparatus has been deployed in the Hudson River due to a visible sheen.

The tugboat was escorting a barge with a crane and two other tugboats at the time of the accident.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the accident "a tragedy" and said a "full investigation" to understand what led to the crash will be launched.
