PEEKSKILL, N.Y. - The city will be hosting its third annual Juneteenth parade and celebration on Saturday, June 15.

Juneteenth is the oldest continuously celebrated African-American holiday, commemorating emancipation from slavery and June 19, 1865, the day slaves in Texas found out they been freed.

Last year’s event drew hundreds of participants and spectators to the downtown area. Its grand marshals were former County Legislator Lois Bronz and actor Michael K. Williams of the HBO TV shows "The Wire" and "Boardwalk Empire."

The Peekskill Youth Bureau is already working on fundraisers to support the festivities, and have announced a Valentine’s Day dinner and dance on Feb. 14. The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Harbor at Charles Point, and will include dinner, music and a cash bar.

Tickets for the event are $40 per person or $75 per couple. They can be purchased by calling the youth bureau at (914) 734-8418 or by contacting Courtney Speights at (914) 320-2131 or at courtneyspeights@yahoo.com
