Local Residents Look to Shake Off Snow Storm

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Many in Dobbs Ferry were left without power Sunday as tree branches and wires were down throughout town following Saturday's heavy snowfall.

The Dobbs Ferry Police Department said there were no significant injuries or damage  but its workload was heavier than normal.

“The majority of it is downed branches, wire, roads closed, but most of those are open now,” Dobbs Ferry police officer Robert Mazzei said Sunday afternoon.  “People are just wondering when their power's going to come on.”

Con Edison reported on its website that 607 people in Dobbs Ferry were without power and 540 in Hastings Sunday. All restoration is expected to be completed by Wednesday night. Hastings Mayor Peter Swiderski sent out a message to residents about the outages on Sunday afternoon.

"These sorts of unusual and violent storms are becoming an unfortunately regular occurrence so we should all be getting used to this," he said. "With that said, the inconvenience and disruption is zero fun and we're doing all we can to alleviate it."

Some residents were more fortunate than others, though, in terms of their electricity.  Alex Orlowski said his power was not affected by the storm.

“We’re the lucky ones,” he said.  “But it was surprising.”

The road conditions were improved from the storm, but with wires and tree branches down around town many had decided to avoid driving.

“You just have to stay off the roads,” said Hilary Tucker as she was out for a walk.

Although the snowfall was surprising to many this early in the year, temperatures were back up in the 40s on Sunday afternoon.

“It feels like Halloween now,” said Lenore Lelah.  “This is classic weather right now, without the snow.”
