STAMFORD, Conn. — Stamford now has the third largest population in Connecticut, jumping past the state capital of Hartford, according to statistics released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

More than 2,200 people have moved to Stamford since 2010, and it now has the third largest population in the state.

The city has seen its population increase by 2,270 people to 125,109 from 2010 to the middle of 2012, surpassing Hartford’s population of 124,893. Stamford remains behind Bridgeport at 146,425 and New Haven at 130,741 for tops in the state.

Part of the reason for Stamford’s continued growth has been its ability to combine business and life opportunities so people are able to work and live in the same city, said Lisa Mercurio of the Business Council of Fairfield County.

“In 1990, it was a completely different place at 5 p.m. than at lunch time,” she said of the improvements the city has made in the past two decades.

The 1.85 percent population increase in Stamford was slightly larger than the growth of Fairfield County at 1.63 percent over the same time period. The county's overall growth was from 918,814 people to 933,835, for a total increase of 15,021, the data said.

“We are on a strong course,” Mercurio said of the county, “You don’t want to see people moving from the region.”

Mercurio, who works as the director of Fairfield County Information Exchange for the business council and tracks population information, said the county’s population increase is in line with where it has been and where an UConn database project’s the population to be by 2025.

According to the database, the population will increase from about 1 percent to 8 percent depending on the fertility level.
