What's Up, Doc's? Cafe to Close

Doc’s Café, a Westport institution since 2000, will close its doors Saturday, Nov. 19. But not without a last hurrah. Doc’s will host a good-bye bash from 3 to 6 p.m. on its final day, when proprietors will offer free coffee, espresso, beer, wine and nibbles to customers.

Much has been written, including in this column, about the resurgence of Westport’s Saugatuck neighborhood. Recent newcomers to the ‘hood such as Craft Butchery, Rizzuto’s and Mario Batali’s Tarry Lodge have put the word “renaissance” on the lips of locals for months. Doc’s Café, however, may be the first local institution to close in the name of “development.”

CTBites reports that the building by the train station that houses Doc’s will be demolished “to allow for the construction of a new multi-use development.” Doc’s owner, Yvonne Dougherty, won’t be so easily ousted, however. Rumor has it that she is considering relocating the café and reopening sometime in 2012.
