New Rochelle Readies For Irene's Worst

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - John Tucker was one of the several people, at Home Depot Saturday making last minute preparations in anticipation of the predicted Hurricane Irene storm system.

Tucker was also one of the lucky ones to obtain a generator after demand increased Saturday in advance of the storm that may cause widespread electrical problems.

"(It's) better to be safe than sorry," Tucker said.

Marc Esrig and son Jordan were others also making final preparations, and fortunate enough to find a generator.

"We don't have a generator," Marc said. "(We're) just being cautious," he said. "Just in case."

Hurricane Irene was forecasted to hit the area Saturday night and into Sunday ending Sunday night. Monday will be clear with sunny skies.

Various city, county, and state municipality organizations and agencies would be helping to man New Rochelle's emergency operation center located in the New Rochelle Fire Department.

Albert Leonard Middle School, 25 Gerada Lane opened at noon on Saturday as a Red Cross emergency shelter for those in need of temporary relocation.

Habitat for Humanity of Westchester Headquarters will also be opened Sunday into Monday with 50 cots in place. The organization will also serve as a debris clean-up service in the event of destruction from Irene.

Executive Director Jim Killoran said five total pickup trucks will be available along with the organization's construction crews.
