Scarsdale Students Learn EMT Role Up Close

Scarsdale High School students working at the Harrison Emergency Medical Services are getting a close look at the life of an emergency rescue responder. And even when things gruesome, they never shy away.Scarsdale seniors including Luke Moretti and William Harousseau spent their final days of high school working with the Harrison crew as part of their fourth-quarter internships.“The experience has been unbelievable,” said Moretti, who will be attending Vanderbilt University in Tennessee this fall. “We both want to go into medicine and this helped put us ahead.”Scarsdale’s EMS crew doesn’t support the internship program for what Harrison EMS Chief Jospeh Bilotto speculated to be insurance-related reasons. As a precaution, he said he takes extra insurance for the students.Bilotto said the students have gone on some intense calls including assaults and heart attacks during their time with the crew and when given the option to stay back and observe they always chose to remain involved up close.Bilotto also said he enjoys educating the next generation of emergency services personnel. As of the fourth quarter of the local high schools’ marking periods, he said his crew supported an intern staff of 12 students who get an up-close experience of life as an Emergency Medical Technician.
