Flugelhornist Dmitri Matheny Celebrates Release Of 10th Album In Peekskill

PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Renowned ?ugelhornist Dmitri Matheny will celebrate the international release of "Sagebrush Rebellion," his tenth album as a leader, at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26 at BeanRunner Café, 201  S. Division St., in Peekskill.

The appearance will showcase selections from the new album, balancing fresh, original works with familiar jazz classics, hard bop, West Coast cool and beloved standards from the Great American Songbook.  Part of Matheny's 2014 100-city tour of the United States, the event is one of several CD release shows around the country, including performances in San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Oakland, Seattle, Portland, Denver, Santa Fe, Detroit, Phoenix, Honolulu and more.

Other New York state appearances include workshops on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Miller Place and Thursday, Sept. 25 at Irondequoit, and performances Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Cornelia Street Café in New York City and 9/27 at Abilene Bar & Lounge in Rochester.  The Peekskill line-up features Matheny on ?ugelhorn with Richard Johnson on piano, Harvie S on bass and Joe Strasser on drums.  “The Dmitri Matheny Group is a cohesive and seamless unit,” writes the website AllAboutJazz.com, “serving up equal parts soulful expression, caressing phrases, imaginative asides, and dedicated lyricism.”  “Their music is a fertile landscape without boundaries,” writes the Oakland Tribune, “earning Matheny and his cohorts a reputation as one of the most eclectic and daring ensembles on today's jazz scene.”  A graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston,  Matheny vaulted onto the jazz scene in the 1990s as the protégé of jazz legend Art Farmer. Since then, he has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal international following, touring extensively throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, traveling to 19 countries.
