PEEKSKILL, N.Y. This year's Peekskill Celebration begins at 6 p.m. Friday at Riverfront Green, and organizers believe it will once again be lots of fun for the whole family.
Cathy Montaldo, executive director of the celebration, said this year will feature even more of the popular dragon boat races than ever.
"Our cancer awareness races have expanded, so we have 14 cancer awareness teams that are racing all morning and 20 community teams in the afternoon, and we'll do our rose ceremony as we always do at around noon," Montaldo said.
Other events include Support Connection's home run derby Saturday evening, a Yorktown Grange Fair exhibit and the Peeskill Build-a-Boat program. There will be a separate stage and events just for children, Montaldo added.
"We have a bicycle stunt show in the afternoon for the kids," Montaldo said. "He got rained out a bit last year, so we brought him back this year."
Another returning favorite is the Bucket Full of History exhibit.
"They bring in trades from the Civil War era. They have a cooper that builds buckets and a blacksmith that actually has a smith set up and creates things it's really cool to watch," Montaldo said.
As in years past the Peekskill Yacht Club will have its boat parade Friday evening after the West Point Jazz Knights take the stage.
"They'll have between 15 and 20 boats that will be decorated with Christmas lights, and they'll parade right here in front of us at the end of Friday's show," Montaldo said.
