WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Many people think of AOL as the company that provided dial up Internet service, but Verizon purchased the company for $4.4 billion with something much more modern in mind, according to The New York Times.

Verizon purchased the once mighty Internet giant to help increase its footprint in online videos and advertising, especially in the mobile market, The Times reported. 

The communications company will look to use AOL's powerful technology to deliver videos, complete with ads, to its growing base of wireless and cable customers, The Times said.
